Ecology
Giant weasels inhabit temperate forests, grasslands, and rocky hillsides, denning in burrows they excavate or steal from badgers. They prey on rodents, rabbits, ground birds, and small livestock, hunting at twilight. They are solitary except in breeding season and raise a litter of three to five kits each spring. They have voracious appetites and must eat half their body weight daily to survive.
Behaviour
Giant weasels are bold, curious, and aggressive far beyond their size. They attack prey larger than themselves with calculated ferocity, biting the throat and clinging until the victim collapses. They are unaligned beasts, driven by hunger and territory. They are highly mobile and rarely engage in stand-up fights, preferring hit-and-retreat. They have keen senses of smell and hearing but mediocre eyesight.
Origin
Most giant weasels are simply large natural mustelids, products of abundant prey and mild winters. A few are bred by lawful-evil druids as hunting beasts for fey-touched estates. Halfling lore tells of a clever first weasel who outwitted a fox-god, earning the right to grow large; his descendants share his cunning and appetite. They have no inherent magic, only natural predator skill.
