Ecology
Giant wolf spiders inhabit dry hillsides, rocky washes, and desert scrub. Unlike their web-spinning cousins they hunt on foot, using burrows as shelter rather than ambush sites. They prey on rodents, lizards, ground-dwelling birds, and any humanoid small enough to subdue. Females carry their egg sacs on the abdomen and the hatched spiderlings on the back for the first weeks. They are diurnal hunters.
Behaviour
Giant wolf spiders are solitary, fast, and aggressive. They charge prey directly rather than waiting in webs, relying on speed and venom to bring down targets. They communicate through ground-vibration drumming during mating season but otherwise treat conspecifics as competition. They are unaligned beasts, driven by hunger. They flee fire and overwhelming opposition. They despise web-spinning spiders, with whom they compete for territory.
Origin
Giant wolf spiders are products of natural enlargement in arachnid-rich ecosystems with abundant prey and low predator pressure. They are not magical creatures, though desert-dwelling tribes occasionally tame them as guard beasts. An old goliath legend speaks of the first giant wolf spider as a hunter cursed to walk on eight legs by a stone-god he had wronged, and his descendants carry that punishment in their venom.
