Ecology
Guardian nagas are celestial serpents bound to specific sites, usually temples, libraries, or sacred groves. They are sworn protectors, neither mortal nor immortal, sustained by the holiness of the place they guard. They eat little, requiring only rare ritual offerings, and sleep curled in deep meditation for years between disturbances. They never leave their assigned site willingly; to abandon it is to die.
Behaviour
Guardian nagas are wise, patient, and gentle, preferring negotiation and judgment to violence. They speak many languages and hold deep knowledge of theology, ancient history, and local lore. They forgive trespass once, warn twice, and strike on the third offense. Lawful Good in alignment, they will refuse direct orders that violate their oath, even from clerics of their own faith, and they have the political weight to do so without consequence.
Origin
Guardian nagas were created in pairs by celestial powers to protect places too important for fallible mortal stewards. Each pair is bonded by a single oath, and when one dies the other often follows within a year. They were once mortals, in some traditions, monks or priests so devoted that the gods reshaped them into immortal guardians at the moment of their first death. The serpent form is ceremonial, a reminder that wisdom is older than legs.
