Ecology
Lemures are not born — they are **the lowest reformed souls of the Nine Hells**, mortals who damned themselves to Baator and were processed in the formation pits of Avernus. They have no true ecology, only existence. They squelch in the magma seeps and ash plains of the lower Hells, mindless and shapeless. They feel pain (which the devils above them inflict freely) but no thought. **Killed in Hell, they reform in 1d10 days unless destroyed by holy water or under a Bless effect.**
Behaviour
Mindless. Lemures shamble, weep, slap. They have no goals, no language, no memory of their mortal lives. Promoted devils — spined, bearded, bone — were once lemures, and a lemure's only hope is the slow, rare ascent up the infernal hierarchy through millennia of punishment. They feel constant despair but cannot articulate it.
Origin
The lemure form is the punishment-state for souls of evil mortals who lacked the cunning to become true devils. Asmodeus designed the lemure pits during the Reckoning of Hells. **Bel of Avernus** uses lemure legions as cannon fodder in the Blood War against demons, sacrificing them by the millions on the Plain of Infinite Portals.
