Ecology

Mammoths roam tundras, taigas, and arctic grasslands, grazing on tough vegetation, mosses, and bark. They live in matriarchal herds led by experienced cows, with bulls joining only during rut. They migrate seasonally over hundreds of miles, and each adult eats hundreds of pounds of plant matter daily. They reproduce slowly, with cows bearing one calf every five to seven years. Their lifespan reaches 80 years.

Behaviour

Gentle but fiercely defensive, Mammoths charge anything threatening their calves. They form deep bonds within the herd, mourning losses for days. They communicate in low rumbles felt through the ground, audible to other Mammoths from miles away. They cooperate to drive off predators, with multiple adults trampling threats. They tolerate frost giants and other arctic megafauna as ecosystem peers but flee from white dragons.

Origin

Ice age survivors in many fantasy worlds, Mammoths persist where megafauna thrive. They appear in lost worlds, isolated tundras, and the Feywild's eternal winter regions. Some druidic circles consider them sacred ancestors of all elephants. Frost giants domesticate them as mounts and beasts of burden, and some Mammoth bulls serve as living siege weapons in giant raids on southern lands. A few legendary specimens are claimed to speak Sylvan.
