Ecology
Mimics inhabit dungeons, ruins, and abandoned structures where unwary creatures wander past objects worth stealing. They feed on flesh and bone, digesting prey over days while motionless, indistinguishable from furniture. They reproduce slowly, and a single mimic may haunt a dungeon for centuries, choosing different forms as fashion changes. They prefer locations with regular but infrequent foot traffic; too much, and they cannot remain still long enough to feed, while too little starves them out.
Behaviour
Mimics are patient, intelligent, and surprisingly opinionated about aesthetics. They choose forms carefully, considering which objects in a given room look most touchable. They communicate poorly in any spoken language but can manage simple deals when motivated; some old mimics negotiate with regular dungeon visitors, accepting tribute of meat in exchange for not eating travelers. Their humor, when present, runs to cruel surprise. They rarely move in their lifetimes.

Some scholars trace them to ancient experiments in transmutation, mimics being failed attempts at sentient illusions. Others classify them as aberrations from the deep planes whose alien biology only resembles familiar objects through prolonged convergence.
