Ecology
Ochre jellies inhabit damp dungeons, sewers, and natural caverns where decaying organic matter accumulates. They feed on flesh, leather, paper, and wood, ignoring metal and stone. They climb walls and ceilings, moving through narrow gaps to reach prey or fresh feeding grounds. They reproduce by division when struck, which means combat itself often increases their numbers, much to the chagrin of adventurers who do not switch to bludgeoning damage. Their pursuit pace is slow but unceasing.
Behaviour
Ochre jellies are simpler than gray oozes but more aggressive. They actively pursue prey rather than waiting in ambush, drawn by vibration and warmth. They engulf small creatures and digest them while still moving, leaving partially dissolved remains in their wake. Their division reflex when slashed is automatic, not strategic, but the result is the same: parties who do not adapt their tactics quickly find themselves outnumbered by progressively smaller but equally hungry jellies.
Origin
Like other oozes, ochre jellies have unclear origins. Some sages classify them as primal life forms predating taxonomy, while others trace them to magical accidents involving transmutation or alchemy. Their distinctive yellow-brown color suggests bile or sulfur in their composition, leading some scholars to propose hellish origins, though no devil claims them. Most likely they evolved alongside other dungeon scavengers, filling an ecological niche no other organism could survive in.
