Ecology
Ogres inhabit hill country, forest edges, and any region where prey is plentiful and competition is manageable. They live in small bands or as solitary brutes, raiding nearby settlements for food and shiny objects. They eat enormous quantities of meat, including humanoids when available, and supplement with whatever they can scavenge. Their lairs are filthy but defensible, often built into natural caves or repurposed ruins. They tolerate giant relatives uneasily, deferring to hill giants and bullying everyone smaller.
Behaviour
Ogres are stupid, greedy, and short-tempered. They settle disputes through fistfights, including among themselves, and the largest ogre in a band typically rules until challenged. They communicate in broken Giant supplemented with grunts and gestures. They form rough loyalties to family members and to whoever feeds them most reliably, including occasionally hobgoblin or giant employers who use them as muscle. Their attention spans are short, but their grudges are long.
Origin
Ogres descend from giant stock, the smallest and most degenerate of the giant lineages. Giant traditions consider ogres an embarrassment and avoid them; ogres in turn resent and emulate their giant cousins. Some myths claim ogres were created when the giant gods fell out of favor and their bloodlines diluted. Others credit ogres' simplicity to a curse for an ancestor's offense. The ogres themselves do not remember and do not care.
