Ecology
The otyugh is a deep-dungeon scavenger that thrives in piles of refuse, decay, and excrement. It digests almost anything organic and gains nutrients efficiently from rot that would poison most creatures. Its three-eyed disc-shaped body sits atop a thick stalk-leg, surrounded by tentacles tipped with sensory tendrils. It pollutes water sources around it, accelerating decay locally to feed itself. Otyughs aerate dungeon-waste piles, paradoxically improving the ecology they inhabit by preventing toxic gas buildup.
Behaviour
Solitary by nature, otyughs grunt and burble in a guttural language they share with kin. Some have been domesticated by intelligent races (orcs, drow, humans of certain dark cults) as living garbage-disposal units. Domesticated otyughs become territorial of their feeding-pits and recognize handlers by scent. They communicate basic ideas telepathically with creatures they touch directly, allowing cult-handlers to negotiate feeding times and bargain for treasure scraps the otyugh has swallowed.
Origin
Sages disagree on otyugh origins: some claim aboleth-experimentation produced them as living waste-purifiers for sea-floor cities; others insist they evolved naturally in the underdark. Ancient elven texts describe otyughs accompanying the first dwarven settlements, kept as pets to keep tunnels clean. Whatever their birth, otyughs are now a stable species, breeding via spawning-mounds in warm refuse and producing tentacled larvae that crawl off to find their own waste-rich nooks.
