Ecology
Panthers occupy the apex predator niche in dense forests and broken hill country, hunting deer, boar, and primates from ambush. Solitary except during breeding, they mark a territory of several square miles with claw-rakes and scent. Mothers raise cubs alone for two years before driving them out. Black coats are melanistic variants of leopards or jaguars; coloration aids dawn and dusk hunting in dappled light.
Behaviour
The panther is a stalker first, fighter second. It prefers branches above game trails and pounces only when prey is isolated. Vocalizations are rare except in mating season; it expresses dominance through scent and posture. Wounded panthers are dangerous; they retreat then circle back along their own trail. Cubs are taught by tagged-prey practice, which can mean half-killed livestock for villagers near a den.
Origin
In some campaign settings, panthers are descended from a forest fey-touched line, granting them unnatural intelligence and longevity. Druids favor them as Wild Shape forms. Sphinx-blooded variants exist with feathered manes and a glimmer of sapience. In tropical realms, jaguar-form panthers are sacred to certain death gods, and their black pelts are worn by jungle priests.
