Ecology
Ponies are domesticated equines bred for hardy small builds, often used in mountain hauling, mining caravans, and as steady mounts for children and Small humanoids. Wild populations exist on moors, islands, and tundra fringes, persisting on marginal forage. They graze on tough grasses, lichen, and bark, surviving harsh conditions where larger horses would starve. Mares foal in spring, and herds defend young by encircling them, with stallions kicking outward at any predator.
Behaviour
Hardy and stubborn, the pony is famously independent. It bonds slowly but loyally, recognizing handlers across years. It panics less easily than a horse but, when it bolts, runs longer due to better stamina. Wild ponies are wary of humanoids; domestic ones often nip, kick, and refuse loads they consider unfair. They crave company and stable in pairs to avoid stress.
Origin
Many cultures domesticated ponies independently: dwarven mining stock, halfling shire-ponies, and gnomish trick-ponies all derive from wild moor herds. Halfling lore cherishes the pony as a comrade rather than livestock. A handful of fey-blooded pony lines exist, with subtle magical traits like sure-footedness on impossible terrain or nightvision. Some elves keep ancient pony-lines as gifts to halfling friends.
