Ecology
Rust monsters dwell in iron-rich underground caverns, mines, and dungeon ruins where ferrous metals are abundant. They feed exclusively on iron and steel, breaking down rusted metal in their digestive tract. Females lay eggs in rusted iron deposits, and hatchlings emerge to graze on the same. Their populations depend on metal supply; an abandoned mine quickly attracts a colony, while pristine cave systems repel them.
Behaviour
Single-minded eaters, rust monsters ignore creatures that lack metal. They walk past unarmored prey toward the smell of iron, antennae waving. When sated, they retreat to private burrows to digest. They are not aggressive in the dungeon-monster sense; they are foragers who incidentally destroy what adventurers value. Threatened, they curl up like armored sowbugs and wait until the danger passes.
Origin
Some sages believe rust monsters were created by a wizard who hated dwarven blacksmiths and seeded the Underdark with them. Others claim they are a primordial species that survived an iron-rich era of the world's youth. Dwarves wage perpetual war against them, refining iron-deterrents and using rust monster shells as polished trophies. A mounted shell on a hall doorway warns visitors not to bring valuable iron.
