Ecology

Sea hags inhabit tidal caves, coral grottoes, and shipwrecks along bleak coastlines. They feed on fish, drowned sailors, and the despair of shore-villages. They live alone or in covens of three, the latter granting shared spell access and far greater threat. Sea hags rarely reproduce; their numbers come from cursed mortal women warped by sea-fiends or by long exposure to a hag's presence.

Behaviour

Sea hags revel in cruelty and ugliness. They poison wells, blight crops, kill livestock, and offer cursed bargains to desperate fishermen. They lie expertly, their voice still beautiful even when the form is grotesque. They are intelligent and patient, willing to spend decades planning a single revenge. Sea hags hate beauty, particularly that of their own former lives, and destroy mirrors on sight.

Origin

Sea hags are former mortal women who were corrupted by despair, betrayal, or pacts with sea-fiends. Some say the first sea hag drowned her unfaithful lover and his new bride, then refused to die from drowning herself. Hag covens enforce the transformation of new members through ritual cruelty. Killing a sea hag's coven sister can either weaken her or empower her with grief-fueled magic, depending on the bond.
