Ecology

A unique creature — there is, by canonical lore, exactly ONE tarrasque per cosmos at a time. It sleeps for centuries underground, burrowing to the planet's deep mantle. When it wakes, it eats. It has eaten cities, civilizations, even small countries before settling back to sleep. Its waking cycle is roughly 700 years in most settings.

Behaviour

Implacable hunger. It does not think in the way mortals do — it simply eats and walks. It cannot be reasoned with, charmed, or commanded. Magic that requires understanding fails on it. It does not retreat unless somehow returned to its slumber state.

Origin

Theories vary by setting: a god's failed creation; a kaiju from a defeated primordial god; the surface world's immune response to civilization; a divine punishment that no one remembers issuing. Forgotten Realms tradition says it was made by a primordial as the ultimate weapon, and its long sleeps are the only mercy left from that war.
