Ecology
Treants are awakened trees, ancient oaks, ash, or yew that have grown self-aware over centuries and gained the ability to walk and speak. They are slow to mature, taking three to five centuries to fully wake, and they may live two thousand years. They eat sunlight and rain but also remember every creature that has rested in their shade. They serve as the wisest residents of old-growth forests, mentors to dryads and protectors of ranger lodges.
Behaviour
Treants are slow, contemplative, and patient on a timescale that frustrates short-lived peoples. They speak common but prefer their own language, a creaking-leaf tongue that takes hours to convey what humans say in minutes. They are kindly toward most forest dwellers but implacable toward those who harm the woods, especially fire-bringers and clearcutters. They form councils with other treants every few decades to discuss the slow movements of weather and war.
Origin
Treants are not created but awakened, either by druidic ritual or by spontaneous emergence in forests of sufficient age and magic. The oldest treants claim to have witnessed the first dawn, though their concept of time makes verification impossible. Folklore holds that the first treant was a tree that grew over a sleeping god, absorbing dreams across centuries until it became aware. Subsequent treants are children of that first awakening, the way mortal children are of their grandparents.
