Ecology
Worgs are intelligent, evil cousins of wolves, native to mountainous wilderness and goblinoid territories. They form packs of three to eight, often allied with goblin tribes through ancient agreements that benefit both species. Worgs hunt in territories overlapping wolves and frequently kill rivals to expand range. They prey on livestock, travelers, and any wildlife large enough to sustain them. Their intelligence rivals goblins, allowing complex coordination during ambushes.
Behaviour
Worgs are cruel, ambitious, and politically minded within their packs. Leadership comes through dominance challenges that rarely end in death; the loser submits and serves. They negotiate with goblin allies in shared dialect, exchanging hunting advice for mounting privileges. Captive worgs cannot be trained reliably; they bide their time and escape when handlers grow complacent. They take bribes of meat and treasure but honor the deal only when convenient.
Origin
Worg origin tales describe a wolf alpha who made a pact with a fey lord to gain intelligence and cunning, paying with the souls of every cub thereafter. Others claim worgs are wolves twisted by exposure to evil planar bleed-throughs in mountainous regions. Goblin shamans tell a version where worgs and goblins were created together by the same dark deity to serve as inseparable companions in eternal raid and conquest of softer races.
