Ecology
Ancient black dragons make their lairs in drowned ruins, fetid swamps, and tidal caverns where freshwater mixes with brine. Their bile poisons every spring within a hundred miles, killing fish at the water's edge and bleaching reeds black. Crocodiles, leeches, and giant insects gather around them as servants and scavengers, fed on the corpses of the dragon's failed bargains. Where a black dragon settles, plague follows within a decade. Whole cultures rebuild their religions to appease them, raising frog temples and offering criminals as tribute. The swamp itself becomes an extension of the dragon's appetite.
Behaviour
They are vicious, paranoid, and obsessed with cruelty for its own sake. Unlike reds who crave grandeur, ancient blacks delight in petty domination, the slow death of a captured knight over weeks, the corruption of a hopeful village into informers. They torture for amusement and then ask philosophical questions to the dying. They never trust anything, including their own offspring, and will eat their wyrmlings if denied a meal. They hoard not gold for splendor but bones, teeth, and the personal effects of victims, currencies of suffering they alone value.
Origin
Hatched in stagnant pools where their mothers seeded them with diseased meat, ancient blacks survived a wyrmling phase among siblings they had to murder to claim territory. Most spend their juvenile centuries as bandits of marshes before settling into a permanent lair. The oldest, those approaching ancient status, often crawled out of ruined empires their predecessors razed, raised on tales of great rotten kingdoms. Some scholars argue ancient blacks were not always cruel, that the first generation served a swamp god whose death twisted them. Most blacks would eat such a scholar before answering.
