Ecology
An Awakened Shrub is an ordinary bush — bramble, briar, hawthorn, or scrub — given sapience by the Awaken spell (8th-level druid magic, 1,000 gp diamond, 8-hour ritual). It draws nutrients normally, photosynthesizes, and produces fruit or thorns appropriate to its species. Its needs remain plant needs: light, water, soil. What changes is awareness. It now hears wind as sound, feels footsteps as pressure, and remembers who has tended its glade.
Behaviour
Loyal to whoever cast Awaken on it for the 30-day charm and often beyond, out of attachment. Speaks one language, usually Sylvan or the caster's tongue. Personality clusters around plant-traits: thorny shrubs are prickly, fruiting shrubs are generous. Most are sedentary witnesses, content to watch a single grove for decades. They rarely seek conflict but defend rooted kin fiercely against fire and axe.
Origin
The Awaken spell is druidic and elven in origin, taught in the High Forest of Faerun and at the College of the Land. Famous awakened groves include the talking thicket of Mielikki's shrine north of Silverymoon, said to have witnessed the assassination of a Harper. The first awakened plants are credited to the elf-archdruid Shevarash in pre-Spellplague legend.
