Ecology
An Awakened Tree is a normal large tree — oak, elm, ironwood, redwood — that has received the **Awaken** spell, gaining sentience, language, and the ability to move slowly. They live where they grew; they cannot uproot far. Most awakened trees serve a druid or fey patron, guarding sacred groves, hidden springs, or burial circles. They sustain themselves on sunlight, water, and soil — same as before — but now reflect upon it.
Behaviour
Awakened Trees are **slow, patient, opinionated**. They prefer conversation to combat, especially with travelers who introduce themselves politely. They distrust those carrying axes, fire, or harvested wood. When provoked they swing their branches with reach 10 and surprising force, but they cannot pursue. Most have **deep memory** — having watched centuries pass — and may share lore for the price of a meaningful gift (a song, a story, water from a far place).
Origin
Each Awakened Tree owes its sapience to a druid's casting. The first Awaken-trees were planted by elven sages of the Green Ages as living archives. Today the spell is rare and slow (8 hours, expensive components), so only a few trees per generation are awakened. Some druid-circles maintain registries of awakened trees; killing one is a serious crime in fey-aligned lands.
