Ecology

Domestic cats live alongside humanoids in cities, farms, ships, and inns. Solitary hunters by nature, they tolerate density when fed. Their diet is small rodents, birds, fish, and table scraps. A single cat can clear a granary of vermin in a season. Feral cats form loose colonies near food sources. Lifespan 10–20 years; some Forgotten Realms cats, blessed by Sharess, live considerably longer.

Behaviour

Independent, curious, judgmental. Cats bond selectively with humanoids, often choosing one person and tolerating others. They hunt by stealth and ambush, often killing for sport. A cat's recognition of magic is nearly supernatural — many cats stare at invisible creatures. Folk wisdom is correct: cats see what people cannot.

Origin

In Forgotten Realms canon, cats are sacred to Sharess (Faerunian deity of hedonism, formerly the Mulhorandi cat-goddess Bast). Temple cats live in her shrines in Calimshan and Mulhorand. The catfolk race (Tabaxi) of Maztica claim cats as cousins. Witches across the Realms favor cats as familiars; the **Cat is the most-cast familiar** via Find Familiar after the imp.
