Ecology
Dire wolves dominate temperate forests, taiga, and high grasslands, hunting in packs of six to twelve led by an alpha pair. They take elk, moose, and bison, coordinating ambushes that drive prey toward designated killers. A pack's territory may span hundreds of square miles, marked by scent and howling at boundaries. Their dens are dug into hillsides or hollow logs and lined with the fur of past kills.
Behaviour
Dire wolves are intelligent and social, using complex vocalizations to coordinate hunts across long distances. They communicate hierarchy through posture, gaze, and tail position, and disputes within a pack are settled with bared teeth rather than killing bites. They view humanoids as prey or rivals, and a pack that learns to associate humans with easy meat becomes a serious regional threat.
Origin
Dire wolves are the surviving descendants of an ice-age predator lineage, larger and stronger than their woodland cousins. Some druidic traditions revere them as the children of the Wolf Father, a primordial spirit. Goblin and orc tribes occasionally tame and breed dire wolves as mounts, though the relationship is fraught and the wolf often turns on cruel handlers when food grows scarce.
