Ecology

Frogs occupy wetlands worldwide — ponds, marshes, slow rivers, jungle streams, even temporary rain-pools. Tadpoles eat algae; adults eat insects, small fish, and other frogs. Frogs are amphibian indicator species: a swamp without frog song has been poisoned, drained, or claimed by something larger. Their skin is permeable, making them sensitive to magic and pollution. Some Faerunian species are mildly toxic.

Behaviour

Frogs croak in chorus to advertise territory and attract mates. They go silent when predators approach — making frog silence a reliable Perception cue. Most are ambush hunters, sitting motionless and snapping with sticky tongues. Some species (poison-dart varieties of Chult) are deadly to handle.

Origin

Bullywug clans of Faerun's swamps revere giant frogs as ancestor-spirits, and the demon prince Wastri (the Hopping Prophet) is depicted as a frog-headed humanoid. Sacred frog ponds in the Mere of Dead Men are said to harbor amphibian witnesses to drowned battles. Druids of marsh circles often Wild Shape into frogs for stealth in wetlands.
