Ecology
Giant Fire Beetles are bioluminescent insects of the Underdark, fungal forests, and rotting-wood biomes. Two glowing glands on the abdomen shed light continuously for 6 days after the beetle's death — making the corpse a portable lantern. They feed on fungus, lichen, and decaying wood. Their light attracts moths and small prey, but also predators; they typically cluster in defensible cracks.
Behaviour
Slow, docile, territorial only over food. They scuttle from threats and rarely bite unless pinned. In groups, they huddle for combined illumination — a social lighting behavior. They communicate by antennal touch and pheromone. Underdark dwellers treat them as livestock for both light and protein.
Origin
Drow, duergar, and svirfneblin all farm Giant Fire Beetles in their cities. The Menzoberranzan beetle-farms beneath the Bazaar produce the lanterns hung in noble houses — a single jar lasts a tenday. Adventurer's slang for being 'beetle-broke' means relying on these cheap glowlamps because magic is unaffordable. They were first cataloged by the gnomish naturalist Klepperwiel in DR 1314.
