Ecology
Giant spiders inhabit forest canopies, cave systems, abandoned ruins, and Underdark passageways. They build elaborate web complexes spanning rooms or grove clearings, using silk far stronger than steel for traps and cocoons. They prey on rats, deer, humanoids, and any creature their webs can hold. Females are larger and devour smaller males after mating. They lay clutches of hundreds of eggs in silken sacs.
Behaviour
Giant spiders are patient, calculating ambush predators with Intelligence sufficient to recognize bait, traps, and prepared parties. They retreat from organized resistance and return when defenders have left. They communicate with silk-vibration signals across web complexes. Drider, ettercap, and drow command them, raising them as mounts and guards. Wild giant spiders are unaligned. They despise fire and avoid lit areas.
Origin
Most giant spiders descend from natural arachnids enlarged by ambient Underdark magic or drow breeding programs. Lolth herself is said to have created the first true giant spider as a gift to her drow children, infusing it with malice and cunning. Each giant spider in a drow community carries a drop of demonic essence; wild surface specimens are merely large beasts without the taint of the Spider Queen.
