Ecology
Giant toads inhabit swamps, bogs, mangrove flats, desert oases, and forest pools in warm climates. They are amphibious, capable of breathing air and water alike, hunting by sitting motionless and snatching prey with sticky tongues. They prey on rodents, birds, deer, and humanoids small enough to swallow whole. Females spawn long ribbons of jellied eggs in pond shallows, of which a handful survive to adulthood.
Behaviour
Giant toads are solitary, slow-moving, and patient. They sit for hours, even days, without moving, blending into mossy stones or rotting logs. They strike with explosive speed when prey enters tongue range. They digest swallowed creatures over hours of acid bath, leaving bones in regurgitated pellets. They are unaligned beasts, neither cruel nor kind, driven by hunger. They despise dry climates.
Origin
Most giant toads are oversized natural amphibians, fattened on rich swamp prey and growing unchecked over decades. A few are products of hag covens and witch-pacts, raised from spawn for use as familiars or guards. Older bog cultures revere a primordial toad-god whose original spawn populated the first marshes, and any unusually old or large giant toad may be considered a minor avatar deserving offerings.
