Ecology
Goats are domesticated and feral across hill country, mountain pasture, and rocky islands. Diet is grass, leaves, bark, and surprisingly inedible items — they will sample cloth, paper, and rope. Their cloven hooves and balance let them walk near-vertical cliffs no other livestock can manage. A goat herd's milk feeds entire highland villages. Lifespan 15 years; some 'sacred' goats live longer in temple keeping.
Behaviour
Stubborn, curious, headbutt-happy. Goats establish hierarchy through ramming contests and never forget a defeat. They communicate by bleat, posture, and a sharp musk during rut. Goats are the **most stubborn livestock** — a goat that doesn't want to move will not move, regardless of threat.
Origin
Hill giants and frost giants both keep goat herds, the latter tending mountain breeds with shaggy white coats. In Forgotten Realms folklore, goats are sometimes vessels for hag curses: a goat that stares too long is suspected of wearing a witch's soul. The **Goat-Lord of Surkh** in Mulhorand is a minor archfiend depicted with curling horns, taking a goat's body for travel among mortals.
