Ecology

Hawks hunt grassland, forest edge, and broken country across temperate Toril. They eat rodents, small birds, lizards, and occasional fish. Smaller and faster than eagles, they hunt by perch-and-pounce or tail-chase rather than dive. Pairs nest on cliffs, tall trees, or castle walls. Their incredibly sharp vision (Keen Sight) lets them spot prey from 200 feet up.

Behaviour

Bold, focused, trainable. Hawks bond to single handlers and accept the hood-and-glove relationship better than any other raptor. They communicate by shrill keen and visual display. In the wild, hawks are aggressively territorial during nesting season but tolerant otherwise. They will harass larger raptors out of their range.

Origin

Falconry is the noble's sport across Faerun, particularly in Cormyr, Tethyr, and Amn. The Purple Dragon Knights of Cormyr have a falconer-corps for battlefield reconnaissance. Lurue (unicorn goddess) and Shaundakul (god of travel) both have hawk-aspects. The **Sembian Hawks** are an elite Sembian Coster trade-courier service that uses trained hawks for sealed messages.
