Ecology
Homunculi are not natural — they are constructed creatures crafted by spellcasters from the maker's own blood, ash, and clay over a 30-day ritual costing 1,000 gp. The homunculus is a bonded extension of its master, sharing a telepathic link across any plane. It needs no food, water, or sleep, but its magical bond means **if its master dies, the homunculus dies too**. They live as long as their master does.
Behaviour
Childlike, eager, devoted. A homunculus has personality but no independent will — it serves its master joyfully. It cannot disobey direct commands. Most homunculi are mischievous in idle moments, hiding small objects, mimicking laughter. They cannot reproduce or live without a master, so each homunculus is utterly unique.
Origin
The homunculus formula appears in the Tome of Wondrous Constructs, attributed to the Netherese arcanist Sythillis (pre-Karsus). Modern wizards across the Realms craft homunculi as research aides; the Hosttower of Luskan is rumored to have a homunculus library where dozens watch their masters' work simultaneously. A famous example: **Glim**, the homunculus of the wizard Lhaeo, scribe to Elminster.
