Ecology
Lizards inhabit warm regions across Toril — deserts, jungles, ruins, basements. Diet varies: insects (most), plants (iguanas), or small vertebrates (monitors). They thermoregulate by basking and shade-seeking. Many can shed tails as a distraction defense (regrowing imperfectly), and most have natural climbing claws letting them scale walls and ceilings. A single dungeon may host dozens of lizard species occupying different niches.
Behaviour
Skittish, fast, watchful. Most lizards freeze when threatened, then dart. They communicate by head-bob, color flash, and dewlap display. Lizards do not socialize; they tolerate density only because food is plentiful. As familiars they are silent and observant, though limited in expressiveness.
Origin
**Lizardfolk** of the Mere of Dead Men and the Lizard Marsh treat normal lizards as small kin and never harm them. Some lizardfolk shamans claim ancestral memory through 'lizard-dreams.' In Chult, the dinosaur ancestry blurs the line: tribal warriors believe small lizards are diminished children of the great wyrms. The Yuan-Ti also use lizards as low servants but eat them when bored.
