Ecology

Octopuses inhabit shallow seas, kelp forests, sunken wrecks, and tide pools. Solitary ambush predators, they eat crabs, fish, mollusks. They are profoundly intelligent — capable of opening jars, recognizing individuals, and using tools (shells as armor). Their soft body squeezes through any opening larger than their hard beak (about 1 inch for a normal octopus). Lifespan is short: 1–2 years in most species, dying after a single mating.

Behaviour

Curious, cautious, clever. Octopuses solve puzzles in real-world studies and remember which divers feed them versus which ones poke them. They communicate primarily by color and skin-texture change — chromatophores let them flash signals or vanish into background. They never socialize and avoid all but mating contact.

Origin

**Sea hags** keep octopus familiars, and the sahuagin of the Sword Coast call octopuses 'mind-fish' for their cleverness. The legendary **kraken** is theorized by sages to be either a kindred or ancestor of the octopus lineage, magically magnified. In Calimshan, an octopus motif appears on House Hadrim's heraldry, marking ancestral merfolk allegiance.
