Ecology
Owls inhabit forests, grasslands, and arctic tundra across Toril. They are nocturnal raptors with silent flight (asymmetrical feathers), exceptional Darkvision, and Keen Hearing/Sight. Diet is rodents, small birds, insects. Most species mate for life and share a single nesting territory across decades. A pair can clear 1,000+ rodents from a region per year.
Behaviour
Silent, patient, watchful. Owls are folkloric witnesses — they perch unblinking and observe. They communicate by hoot, screech, and visual posture. Their silent flight makes them perfect ambush predators and nearly invisible reconnaissance familiars. Unlike hawks, owls do not bond easily with humanoids.
Origin
Sacred to Selune (Faerunian moon goddess) and Mystra (goddess of magic), owls are common wizards' familiars. The **Giant Owls** of the High Forest are Celestial uplifts and serve Mielikki. Witches favor owls as the most discreet messengers. In Aglarond, the **Simbul** (pre-Spellplague Witch-Queen) was rumored to use owl-form for her midnight surveillance of the realm.
