Ecology
Ravens range across temperate and arctic Toril — moors, mountain passes, gallows-fields, urban refuse-piles. Omnivorous: carrion, eggs, insects, grain. They mate for life and form long-term territorial pairs. Astonishingly intelligent: they recognize individual humanoid faces, hold grudges across years, use tools, and play. A raven population near a battlefield indicates fresh death.
Behaviour
Mischievous, vocal, mimicking. Ravens learn simple sounds and reproduce them with eerie precision (DC 10 Insight to detect imitation). They watch humanoid behavior and follow funeral processions. They communicate with each other through over 30 distinct calls. In paired flocks they coordinate to mob predators.
Origin
**Kelemvor's clergy** (Faerunian death-god) treat ravens as psychopomps — souls' guides. The **Raven Queen** (from the wider D&D pantheon) is associated with them. In Cormyr's old folklore, a raven on the king's tower foretells succession crisis. Wizards of Thay use raven familiars almost as often as imps. The famous **Talking Raven of Mulmaster** is said to repeat what dying men whisper.
