Ecology
The rug of smothering is a magically animated construct, not a true creature. Built by mages who weave a binding ritual into expensive carpets, rugs of smothering serve as living traps in homes and tombs. They consume nothing yet endure indefinitely. Without intervention, a single rug can last centuries, claiming victim after victim. Their rarity belies their lethality; one rug per noble manor is plenty.
Behaviour
The rug obeys two compulsions: lie still until prey approaches, then attack and smother to death. It does not learn, age, or feel. Some specimens display rudimentary territory-instinct, returning to a specific room if moved. Activation triggers vary by maker: footsteps, body heat, lying down on it, or simple proximity. The rug does not distinguish between targets; it kills whoever steps on it.
Origin
Rugs of smothering originated as protection devices for wealthy estates, designed to assassinate burglars without alarming guests. Production was outlawed in most kingdoms after several queens were killed by their own gifts. Surviving rugs trade through black markets, often to assassins and paranoid lords. A handful of 'rug guildmasters' still know the binding ritual, jealously guarded across generations.
