Ecology
Sea horses inhabit kelp forests, coral reefs, and seagrass meadows across Toril's warm coasts. Tiny and slow-moving, they anchor with prehensile tails and sip plankton through tube-snouts. Males carry the eggs in a brood pouch — the only known male-pregnancy among vertebrates. They are vulnerable to currents and reef destruction. A sea horse population indicates a healthy, undisturbed reef.
Behaviour
Gentle, fragile, observant. Sea horses court with elaborate dances and bond as monogamous pairs for breeding seasons. They have almost no defenses except camouflage. They communicate by color shift and tail-grip. Merfolk consider them sacred and never harm them.
Origin
**Sashelas of the Deep** (elven sea-god) blesses sea horse colonies as sacred. Merfolk of the Sword Coast keep sacred sea horse gardens around their underwater cities; **Myth Nantar** has sea horse pastures tended by triton priests. The **Sea Princes of Lantan** use stylized sea horses on their coinage. Giant Sea Horses are domesticated as steeds by aquatic elves.
