Ecology
Sphinxes of wonder are tiny celestial creatures inhabiting sacred desert oases, planar gardens, and the libraries of higher sphinxes. They feed on fruit, nectar, and spiritual reverence rather than meat. They live in small flocks of 4–12, often serving as familiars to celestial-aligned wizards or as messengers for greater sphinxes. They mate for life and lay one egg every several decades, which hatches in a riddle-egg ceremony.
Behaviour
Curious, mischievous, and good-hearted, the sphinx of wonder enjoys riddles, puzzles, and questioning travelers. It tests humanoids' character through small challenges and rewards the worthy with hints, blessings, or planar passwords. It avoids combat but will defend itself and sacred ground fiercely. It speaks Celestial, Common, Draconic, and Sphinx, often translating between species at planar gates.
Origin
Sphinxes of wonder are the youngest tier of sphinxes, descended from greater sphinxes who chose to spawn smaller, more agile children to serve as messengers. Some are reincarnated mortals who solved sphinx riddles in life and were rewarded with celestial rebirth. They are sacred to gods of knowledge, mystery, and law. Killing one earns the wrath of Lawful Good powers and any greater sphinx kin.
