Ecology

Spiders inhabit nearly every terrestrial niche on Toril — caves, basements, attics, forests, deserts, ships' holds. They are ambush predators, using webs (spinning species) or pounce (jumping species). Diet is insects and small invertebrates. Spider Climb is universal: their tarsal claws and adhesive hairs cling to ceilings effortlessly. They reproduce explosively — egg sacs hold hundreds.

Behaviour

Solitary, patient, venomous. Spiders feel vibrations through web threads and respond instantly to disturbance. Most flee humanoids; some defend egg sacs aggressively. They cannot communicate with each other in any complex sense (most species are even cannibalistic). As familiars, they are silent and unsettling.

Origin

**Lolth** (Spider Queen, drow goddess) claims dominion over all spiders. Drow priestesses train sacred spiders in their temples. In Menzoberranzan, killing a spider is a capital offense. The **Demonweb Pits** are Lolth's plane, woven of vast webs. **Driders** are punished drow given spider-bodies. Beyond Lolth's reach, spiders are also tools of witches, druids, and city-pest-control alike.
