Top 10 D&D 5e Level-1 Spells

The most powerful level-1 spells in D&D 5e, ranked across all caster lists. Every player should know these picks.

Level-1 spells are the spine of every caster's first ten levels of play. The best ones remain useful through tier 4 because the situations they solve — saving an ally, denying an attack, stopping a fight before it starts — never go away.

  1. +5 AC reaction to a single attack roll. The single best defensive spell in 5e, prepared by every wizard and sorcerer who can.

  2. Bonus-action, 60-ft range, drops a downed ally to 1 HP. The healing spell every party needs.

  3. +1d4 to three allies' attacks and saves. Concentration. Boosts party DPR more than any other level-1 spell.

  4. 5d8 HP worth of creatures fall unconscious automatically. Best level-1 control spell at low levels.

  5. Three darts of 1d4+1 force damage, auto-hit. Bypasses invisibility and bonkers against low-AC casters.

  6. A 1-hour ritual gives you a scout, a Help-action machine, and a free 30-ft delivery service for touch spells.

  7. 2d8 thunder in a 15-ft cube on a Con save, and a failed save shoves the target 10 ft. Damage plus battlefield repositioning from a single level-1 slot.

  8. +1d6 damage to all attacks against a target. The Ranger and Hexblade Warlock workhorse.

  9. 9.Hex

Warlock-only. +1d6 damage per hit on a target plus disadvantage on one ability check. Transfers on target death.

  10. Dex save; advantage on attacks against targets that fail and they can't be invisible. Bard / Druid alpha-strike enabler.
