Wondrous item, very rare tier — Control Spike requires attunement (weight 2 lb, consumable). A device that hijacks the programming of a construct and can be activated remotely. Rules: A sharp-tipped piece of brass roughly 5 inches long, made from thinner strips bound together and engraved with intricate arcane runes.

Description

A sharp-tipped piece of brass roughly 5 inches long, made from thinner strips bound together and engraved with intricate arcane runes.

This item functions as a magical dagger if used as a weapon, though its unwieldy small size reduces your attack rolls by 1 unless you are Small or smaller. If you hit a Construct with the spike and deal damage, you may leave it embedded in the target. You may also embed the spike in a Construct that is Incapacitated without needing to make an attack.

Once embedded, the spike splits into smaller bands and embeds itself surreptitiously inside the target. A DC 18 Arcana check is required to identify that the spike is a foreign object and not originally part of the Construct's design. Once embedded, the spike cannot be removed without destroying it. If the construct is reduced to 0 hit points, the spike is also destroyed.

When you attune to the control spike, speak a command using no more than words. While the spike is embedded in a Construct and you are within 1 mile of it, you may use your action to cast <link /s/reprogram-construct>Reprogram Construct</link> on the target as if cast with an 8th level spell slot. The command you spoke when you attuned to the spike functions as the command issued as part of the spell. This permanently destroys the spike.

Generally, you lose your attunement to a magic item if it is farther than 100 ft from you for 24 hours. For the control spike, that range is 1 mile.
