Ecology
Functionally identical to Shrieker — the renamed entry in newer SRD versions. Shrieker Fungus grows in dim, humid Underdark zones where light is rare and movement triggers alarm. They reproduce by spore release after a shrieking event, scattering offspring along nearby stone. A single grove can carpet a chamber over decades. They are not true plants but a fungal kingdom analogue.
Behaviour
Identical to Shrieker. The only mechanical wrinkle: the Shrieker Fungus version specifies the response as a triggered reaction lasting up to 1 minute or until silenced, rather than a continuous scream. Both treat the creature as a passive trigger rather than an active enemy.
Origin
Same canon as Shrieker — drow cultivation, myconid symbiosis, Underdark ecology. The renamed entry reflects the 2024 SRD's clearer distinction between fungal lifeforms and other plant types. Some sages now hold that Shrieker Fungus and Shrieker are different species, with Shrieker Fungus being native to **deeper, hotter Underdark biomes** like those near magma vents.
