Description

You touch a willing creature. For the duration, the target's movement is unaffected by Difficult Terrain, and spells and other magical effects can neither reduce the target's Speed nor cause the target to have the Paralyzed or Restrained conditions. The target also has a Swim Speed equal to its Speed. In addition, the target can spend 5 feet of movement to automatically escape from nonmagical restraints, such as manacles or a creature imposing the Grappled condition on it.

At Higher Levels: You can target one additional creature for each spell slot level above 4.

This spell has both a 5e (2014) and 2024 Player's Handbook version. Doungim shows the current 2024 stat block above. Differences between editions typically affect components, range, or scaling — check both source books for the table.

School Fit

Abjuration is the school of refusal. Its spells exist to deny: deny an attack, deny a spell, deny a creature's free movement or its hold on this plane. Freedom of Movement reads as Abjuration the moment a player sees what it does — the spell ends, prevents, or absorbs an effect that would otherwise land. Casting Freedom of Movement at level 4 means giving up another high-value spell that turn — the slot is that scarce.

Class Fit

  • Bard: College of Lore Bards have the easiest case for Freedom of Movement: Magical Secrets means the class can reach outside the standard list to grab adjacent picks. Freedom of Movement has an at-higher-levels rule; the spell's per-slot scaling makes upcasting worthwhile in the right context.
  • Cleric: Domain-bonus spells fill some of the Cleric's prep automatically; check whether the chosen Domain already grants Freedom of Movement before manual prepping. At higher spell-slot levels Freedom of Movement grows — refer to the upcast clause for the exact terms.
  • Druid: Druid concentration is precious. Most Druids prep one big concentration spell and one non-concentration utility per day; Freedom of Movement fits one of those slots. Freedom of Movement scales when upcast — see the higher-level note on the spell page.
  • Ranger: Gloom Stalker, Hunter, Fey Wanderer, Drakewarden, and Horizon Walker each shape what Freedom of Movement is worth: subclass-bonus spells reshape the known-spell budget. Upcasting Freedom of Movement changes the effect; the spell page lists the per-slot scaling.
