Ecology
Acolytes are junior members of a religious order — novices in their first or second year of formal training. They are taught liturgy, basic healing, ritual maintenance, and the cantrip-tier divine magic that marks them as touched by their god. Most acolytes serve a senior priest as assistant, attending sermons, maintaining altars, copying prayer books, and running errands across the temple grounds. Some are orphans raised in the temple; others are noble children sent to serve a year before inheriting; a few are converts of any age finding new purpose late.
Behaviour
An acolyte is earnest, slightly anxious, and genuinely devoted. Their faith is not yet weathered by doubt — that comes later, at priest tier or never. They defer reflexively to senior clergy, struggle with theological questions they haven't yet studied, and feel a deep personal responsibility to the temple's lay community. In combat, they're frightened but rarely flee; the doctrine they've been taught insists their god watches every act of cowardice. Off duty, they gossip like any apprentice.
Origin
The acolyte tradition predates most settled religions — every temple needs hands. The role's modern shape was codified during the great cathedral-building era, when major faiths formalized their hierarchies and named entry-level clergy 'acolyte' across linguistic boundaries. Some orders graduate acolytes to priest after a single year of study; others demand a decade of menial service before granting spell-tier authority. A few remote sects refuse to recognize the title at all and require novices to earn ordination through a personal vision quest.
