Ecology

Berserkers are warriors trained in the ecstatic combat traditions of cold-climate or tribal cultures — Northland clan-fighters, jungle initiates, or pit-fighters who learned the rage technique from a teacher. The training is partly physical (conditioning, weapon drill) and partly ritual (fasting, herbs, drumming, sacred wounds). Not every berserker comes from the same culture, but the fighting style — total commitment, no defense, channeling pain into damage — is shared. Berserker warriors typically serve a chief or arena patron and are paid in food, glory, and shares of plunder.

Behaviour

Outside of battle berserkers are often startlingly calm — quiet, deliberate, even gentle with children and animals. The rage is a switch, and most berserkers regard it as a sacred state separate from their normal self. They carry deep pride in their reputation for not breaking, not retreating, not yielding. They tell stories about dead comrades by name and remember every wound's source.

Origin

Berserker traditions arose independently in dozens of cultures, all sharing the discovery that a warrior who ignores fear and pain is briefly worth several conventional fighters. Some lineages trace back to bear-cult or wolf-cult initiations, where the warrior was believed to take on the spirit of the animal. The technique has been suppressed by some lawful states (which preferred disciplined infantry) and elevated by others (which prized champion-level combat).
