Ecology
A bandit captain is the leader of a band — chosen by competence, charisma, or violence, and confirmed by the willingness of the others to follow them. Most captains have prior military or sailing experience, which is where they learned chain-of-command and small-unit tactics. They negotiate with fences, allocate watch shifts, settle internal disputes, and decide which targets to hit. A successful captain holds the role for years; an unsuccessful one is dead within months.
Behaviour
Captains are calculating, not bloodthirsty. They run the band as a small business, weighing risk and return on every job. They cultivate relationships with corrupt officials, sympathetic villages, and rival captains who might cooperate or compete. In combat they lead from the second rank, preserving themselves because the band falls apart without leadership. They are usually willing to bargain — captains who fight to the death rarely make it to captain.
Origin
The captain archetype is as old as banditry itself, but the modern professionalized version emerged alongside the rise of mercenary companies. Many bandit captains are deserters or veterans from disbanded mercenary units, and they bring the same organizational habits — quartermaster duties, formal council meetings, written contracts with fences — that distinguish a working band from a brawling rabble.
