Ecology
Archmages are the apex of formal magical study — wizards who have spent forty to a hundred years pushing past the standard curriculum into 8th- and 9th-level spell research. Most are alumni of a major academy, but the title isn't conferred by any institution; it's recognized informally among practitioners. An archmage typically maintains a tower or sealed manor as a workshop, often warded with permanent abjurations and staffed by bound or summoned servants. They keep correspondence with two or three rivals and a handful of former students.
Behaviour
Archmages are private to the point of reclusiveness. Their work is fragile and slow, and interruption costs months of progress, so they fortify their privacy with magical defenses and difficult terrain. When dealing with the world, they are unfailingly polite and entirely transactional — they will trade favors, knowledge, or reagents, but they expect their time to be valued in kind. Many archmages are mentors to a single chosen apprentice and emotionally distant to everyone else.
Origin
The first archmages emerged from the founding generation of the great academies, when a handful of researchers pushed magical theory into territory that demanded private tower work to sustain. Over centuries the title became aspirational — a wizard who survives long enough and produces enough original research to be acknowledged by peers. Most magical traditions now have an archmage equivalent, even oral and shamanic ones, though those rarely use the academic term.
