Ecology

Commoners are the broad, unmagical, untrained majority of any humanoid population. They are farmers, weavers, bakers, smiths, miners, fishers, dockhands, servants, and shopkeepers — the people whose labor builds and feeds every settlement. Most have a single trade learned through apprenticeship or family tradition, and most spend their entire lives within twenty miles of their birthplace. They organize through families, guilds, neighborhoods, and parish congregations rather than through formal political structures.

Commoners are cautious, busy, and pragmatic. Their lives are full of work and the small social negotiations of village or neighborhood life. They distrust strangers reflexively, warm to them slowly, and remember kindnesses for years. Most have strong opinions about their neighbors, weak opinions about distant politics, and no opinions at all about cosmic matters. When violence reaches them, they freeze, hide, or — in extremis — pick up whatever's in their hand.
