Ecology
Gnolls are demon-touched humanoids with the heads and instincts of hyenas, descended from ordinary hyenas elevated by an ancient demonic compact. They run in packs of six to twenty, follow the dominant alpha, and migrate constantly across grasslands, forest edges, and desert margins in pursuit of prey. They do not build settlements, do not farm, and do not maintain long-term territory; their entire economy is the next kill. A pack can strip a small village to bones in a night.
Behaviour
Gnolls are driven by a hunger that exceeds biological need — the demonic taint compels them to kill beyond satiation, to chase prey to exhaustion, to consume more than they can digest. They are not stupid, but their cognition is bent toward the hunt at the expense of every other concern. They communicate in hyena-like cackles and a small spoken language, mostly for hunt-coordination. Captives are food, not slaves.
Origin
Gnolls arose from a compact between the demon-prince of slaughter and a pack of natural hyenas in a long-ago era. The compact granted the hyenas humanoid form and weapon use in exchange for permanent service to slaughter as a sacred act. Subsequent generations are born gnoll, no longer requiring the original ritual, but the demonic taint persists and grows stronger when feeding-frenzy is sustained. Some scholars believe the compact could be unmade; gnolls vehemently disagree.
