Ecology
Hobgoblins are the disciplined martial cousins of goblins and bugbears, organized into legions, fortress-states, and military empires that span entire regions. Society is rigidly hierarchical, structured around military rank from cradle to grave, with every hobgoblin assigned a role at maturity. They build roads, fortifications, supply depots, and proper barracks; their territory looks more like an occupying empire than a tribal range. Hobgoblins value craftsmanship, lawful order, and martial honor in roughly that priority.
Behaviour
Hobgoblins are formal, drilled, and patient. They follow chain of command without question because the alternative — earlier in their history — was constant civil war. Within rank, they are surprisingly egalitarian; promotion is by merit, and a competent grunt can rise to general. They do not panic, do not improvise without orders, and do not betray comrades. Outside hobgoblin society they are correct, professional, and dangerous.
Origin
Hobgoblins share the goblinoid origin in the Feywild, where they were the soldier-caste of the original triumvirate. Modern hobgoblin culture preserves more of that original martial structure than goblins or bugbears have, partly because the discipline is self-reinforcing — every generation drills the next. Several hobgoblin empires have risen and fallen across history; the next is always being built somewhere.
