Captains maintain personal cabins, private logs, and small libraries of charts often more accurate than any navy holds. They keep correspondence networks across friendly ports, fence stolen goods through trusted brokers, and pay informants in coastal towns to flag unwary merchant traffic. Most captains die at sea; the few who retire become legends or, more often, boring men nobody believed had ever been pirates.

Behaviour

A captain projects confidence with calculated effort, knowing the crew watches every gesture. They favor rituals — the same coat, the same chair at the table, a particular toast before action — that build the myth around them. In private they read ledgers, fret about provisions, and write long letters to children they rarely see. Captains balance cruelty and generosity carefully: a fair shareout buys loyalty, but a public flogging keeps it. Origin

Many pirate captains began as merchant officers, naval lieutenants, or cargo masters who turned after some grievance — a stolen prize, a withheld wage, a betrayed promotion. Their training in navigation, accounting, and command translates directly to the pirate trade, which is why successful captains so often came from the very institutions they raid.
