Ecology

Acolytes are junior clergy still in training, typically aged sixteen to twenty-five, who handle the practical labor of a temple: candle replacement, scripture copying, hospice care, and the dawn cleaning of altars. They live in shared dormitories, eat at communal tables, and rotate through duties under a senior priest's supervision. Training takes years and includes scripture, basic healing, history, and the specific liturgy of their faith. Most acolytes will eventually become full priests; some leave the order and become hedge-healers or scholars who keep the robes packed in a trunk.

Behaviour

Acolytes show the nervous earnestness of people whose faith has not yet been tested. They quote scripture eagerly, sometimes inaccurately, and they take small slights deeply. Most are hopeful, kind, and genuinely shocked by the cruelty their senior clergy have learned to absorb. They form close peer bonds with fellow acolytes — friendships forged in long study nights — and they fear disappointing their teacher above almost any other consequence. They handle real crises poorly until enough crises have happened that handling them becomes habit.

Origin

Acolyte programs emerged from medieval scholastic traditions where young initiates served as apprentices to senior clergy in exchange for room, board, and education. Most temples maintain an acolyte cohort to ensure the next generation of priests, with bishops or high priests vetting candidates from local families, orphanages, and occasionally adventuring parties whose youngest members feel called. Acolyte robes are often hand-me-downs, slightly too long or short, which is why temple groups always look slightly uneven in formal procession.
