Ecology

Scouts serve armies, noble houses, ranger conclaves, and merchant guilds whose caravan routes need watching. Training combines wilderness survival, tracking, ranged combat, basic first aid, and the patience to sit motionless for hours. Scouts work in pairs for safety, traveling light with bow, shortsword, ration pouches, and oilskin maps. Most have a home territory they know intimately — every spring, every game trail, every ridge with line-of-sight on a road. They earn modest wages but supplement with bounties on bandits, fees for guiding travelers, and occasional pelts traded at frontier outposts.

Behaviour

A scout's defining trait is comfort with silence. They speak in clipped sentences, listen carefully, and notice things conversation partners would prefer hidden. Most prefer the company of one or two trusted peers to crowds and grow uncomfortable in cities after a few days. Scouts maintain superstitions about weather, animal behavior, and the proper way to build a fire that won't draw notice. They distrust officers who haven't done the work and respect the wilderness in ways townfolk find slightly mystical, even when the scout would call it simple practicality.

Origin

Scouting traditions come from frontier survival schools, ranger orders, and indigenous tracking practices absorbed by colonizing armies. Many scouts began as hunters whose skill drew the attention of a recruiter offering steady pay. Others were tribal warriors whose people now serve a larger kingdom in exchange for treaty protections. The mix produces scouts whose loyalties are layered — to their immediate captain, their old hometown, the wilderness itself — and whose desertions, when they happen, tend to be quiet vanishings rather than dramatic departures.
